What is an air particle counter?

Air particle counter is a portable measurement instrument that is capable of autonomously take measurements and recording particle counts and it size over a predetemined period of time. The collected data can be retrieved, viewed and evaluated after it has been recorded into the device.
They consist of a chamber with a sensor, containing a discrete laser which uses mirrors and optics to view the particle, and a pump to pull the required sample through the sensor. The bigger the particle the more light it reflects and therefore the bigger the electrical pulse converted by the photo detector.
Particle counters do not distinguish between viable and non-viable particles but are much more technically advanced than air samplers.
The particles are sampled using a selected volume of air. Depending on what standard is followed, (e.g. ISO 14644, ISO 14698, etc) the sample is taken and the concentration of particles per volume is displayed on the screen of the particle counter.
The pharmaceutical industry is mostly interested in the reporting of two sizes: 0.5 µm and 5.0 µm, as these ranges contain the microorganisms that will have an adverse effect on the sterility of the product.
The main benefits of using particle counter is the ability to automatically collect data on a 24-hour basis. Once activated, device is installed and left unattended to measure and record information for the duration of the monitoring period. Then, data can be retrieved to your computer for analysis, plotting and reporting results.
A non-viable particle is a particle that does not containa living microorganism but acts as transportation for viable particles.

Bacteria, Virus and other viables particles as COVID-19 don't fly.

Bacteria and viable particles will hitch rides on non-viable particles floating about in the room. They attach themselves to particles of approximately 1.0µm.
Hence, if you have very few 0.5 µm particles you are unlikely to have many viables floating about.
Particles of size =5.0µm offer the same opportunity for viables to ride on, but in addition, also present a threat to blocking veins or capillaries if they get into your blood stream.
If the pharmaceutical customer is preparing a product that will ultimately be injected into a human body, they need to be assured that the product doesn't contain particles that will cause blockages.
Human veins tend to be from approximately 7 to 50 µm and capillaries approximately between 4 to 7 µm.
