What Is Throughput?

Throughput is the average number of units processed per time unit.

In other words, throughput is the number of items, products, or services that a manufacturing operation can produce

and deliver to a client within a specified period of time.

It is a rate of production or the speed at which a product is processed.

Understanding Throughput

Throughput is used is often to identify and minimize the weakest links in the production process.

High throughput means that your company can have high revenues.

Throughput considers the flow rate of raw materials being processed in finished products.

How to Calculate Throughput

The formula for calculating Throughput is:

                              Inventory (the number of units in the production process) 

Throughput =  ————————————————————————————-

                              The time the inventory units spend in production from start to finish

Throughput Example:

Let’s say that a pharmaceutical company has to produce 1 Million Covid18 vaccine vials, and the average time that

lot of 100,000 vials requires one day in the production process. The throughput for the company would be:

T = (1,000,000 vials inventory / 100,000 vials per day) = 10 days of inventory (to product 1M vaccines vials.)
