Best Locations of Temperature Data Loggers for Thermal Mapping.

Best Locations of Temperature Data Loggers for Thermal Mapping

In this article, you will learn where are the best locations of temperature data loggers placement during validations thermal mapping, and other environmental monitoring in Puerto Rico.  Moreover, here you can discover how to get a thermal mapping validation template and validation management software application to handle your qualification activities fast and easily.

Understanding Where to Place the Temperature Data Loggers for Thermal Monitoring.

Once you estimate and calculate how many data loggers or sensors should be necessary for your thermal mapping, the next step is to determine where they shall be placed and installed to start the temperature monitoring.
Normally, all data loggers shall be distributed throughout each location in which your product shall be placed to get a detailed understanding of the thermal profile.

Moreover, it is important to identify the most relevant cold and hot spots within the area and determine locations:

1. To place your product.
2. To place your permanent monitoring probe(s)
3. Establish the alarm setup configuration.

It is highly recommended to install a data logger very close and adjacent to the monitoring/alarm probe/s. The information of this data logger can be used to correlate and confirm that the alarm probe location is the most suitable for the monitoring probe i.e. the highest or lowest temperature within the area.

You can install your monitoring probe in one of the following locations depending on the purpose of your permanent monitoring system:

1. Location closest to the average temperature within the area. This is the location least likely to fail since any fault in the area is unlikely to be detected until a prolonged period of time or the next thermal mapping exercise.
2. Location closest to the highest heat location (called hot spot location). This is the location most likely to fail in the high-temperature limit since any fault with the system going too hot is very likely to be detected.

Location closest to the lowest to heat location (called cold spot location).

This is the location most likely to fail in the low-temperature limit since any fault with the system going too cold is very likely to be detected.

In order to have a balanced system of monitoring and alarm, some people use two monitoring and alarm probes placed within the area. These two (2) data loggers or probes could be located in the minimum and the maximum temperature locations identified during the temperature mapping. Indeed, these two probes shall be able to identify any faults with high and low temperatures in the area.

In case that your control system is very sensitive and frequently generate many false alarms due to temporary excursions as part of the normal behavior of the area, it is highly recommended to install the monitoring probes with some kind of retardant, buffers (Glycol, aluminum block well, etc.) or use an alarm delay to prevent false alarms caused by routine use (door opening, etc.)

CIQA can bring you validation services, as well as the rental of the data loggers to make the temperature monitoring.

Thermal studies require the use of very expensive validation instrumentation and equipment, which represent a high cost in many cases if the utilization of that equipment is very low.

Since some companies do not have the internal personnel with the experience and knowledge to perform these studies, they contract third-party companies as CIQA Engineering to make that work. Thermal Mapping Outcomes

CIQA Engineering has the equipment and experienced professionals to perform the thermal mapping and qualifications. We can prepare the protocols, bring the measurement instruments for monitoring, make the analysis and reporting documents once the data is gathered.

Recommendations to Avoid Mistakes Selecting Temperature Data Loggers.

We suggest evaluating all your requirements and needs to use temperature data loggers, but, also consider the frequency of use monthly, and how fast you need them on-site for your validation study. Thermal Mapping Distribution Studies

So, you can determine if is better to buy or rent them based on the expertise and time availability of your employees to configure and prepare the trending graphs and summary statistical reports on time. Thermal Mapping Outcomes

Before buy, consider the cost of the data loggers, but, also the cost of the calibration and its lead time.

Evaluate and compare the total costs and lead times, against the costs to rent data loggers already calibrated.

If you are NOT using temperature data loggers frequently, consider a fast CIQA rental of the calibrated data loggers required for the thermal study. The
