In this article, you will learn what are transport waste and how to reduce them in 4 steps using lean manufacturing techniques.

Transport Waste Definition

Transport waste is the excess movement of materials and items from one place to another place.

It is called a “waste” since adds no value to the product, it does not transform it, so the client would not be happy in paying for any extra movement!

Transport is one of the eight wastes of lean manufacturing (Muda).

Transportation often leads to operations having to wait for the product to be delivered due to delays (the waste of waiting), thus costing more money as well as extending the lead times and creating delivery problems.

The Costs of the Transport Waste.

The transportation time of the employees is the time that they do not use to add value to the product.

This cost will affect directly the company’s income and profit.  Queues Waste

The time spent transporting shall be required later in the form of overtime at a premium rate, excellent for the employees but not so good for the company.

It involves the cost of the vehicles, combustible, electricity, material handling equipment, staff to operate it, training, safety precautions, extra space for the movement of material, and so forth.

Even worse, transportation could render to operations having to wait for the product to be delivered due to delays (the waste of waiting), thus costing more time and resources and prolonging the lead times plus creating delivery constraints.

Transportation waste is one of the Eight (8) Wastes of Lean Manufacturing.

Transportation is considered the first waste in lean manufacturing because is a non-value activity for the end-user(s).

The eight wastes of lean manufacturing are:  Queues Waste

      1. Transport
      2. Inventory
      3. Motion
      4. Waiting or Queues
      5. Over-production
      6. Over-processing
      7. Defects
      8. Skills – The 8th Waste

2 Main Causes of the Transport Waste.

The principal causes that promote transportation wastes are:

      1. Poor workflow design and
      2. Weak supply chain management.

How to Eliminate or Reduce Transport Wastes in 4 Steps.

      1. Redesigning the layouts according to lean manufacturing techniques,
      2. Creating value streams,
      3. Making value flow at the pull of the customer,
      4. Reducing the spaces between the operations.
