Quality Loss Definition

Quality loss is a measure of First Pass Yield (FPY) and takes into account process defects and reduced yields.

The quality score is a metric or ratio that takes into account the following 2 factors during the manufacturing process:

Quality Loss  = Fully Productive Time / Net Run Time

  1. Fully Productive Time: fastest no Stop Time to manufacture Good Count of components.
  2. Net Run Time: fastest possible time to manufacture the Total Count of components.

A Quality Loss Score of 100% means when the process is running, it is only making good parts.

The quality score (also called a Quality Loss) is one of the three OEE Losses, which includes Availability Score and Performance Score.

The OEE formula is considering the multiplication of the availability score, performance score, and quality score and is represented by a percentage.

OEE = Performance Score Availability Score  x  Quality Score

How to Calculate the Quality Loss Score?

Quality losses consider those causes that make defective components (not meet quality standards or specifications), including those components that are reworked.

The quality score can be calculated in two ways.

1. Quality Loss Estimated based on Manufacturing Time:

The quality loss aims to estimate the ratio of Fully Productive Time (only Good Count manufactured as fast as possible with no Stop Time) to Net Run Time (fastest possible time for Total Count).

2. Quality Loss Estimated based on the Number of Units Manufactured:

Quality Loss = Count of Good Acceptable Components / Total Count of Components Manufactured.

The total count of components manufactured contains the sum of the count of rejects or non-acceptable components plus the count of the good acceptable components.

The following formula explains the calculation of the Total Count of Components Manufactured:

Total Count of Components Manufactured = Count of Good Acceptable Components + Count of Rejected Components
